English Brass Barrelled Flintlock Pistol by Phillips
A very good full stocked English brass barrelled flintlock pistol by Phillips from around 1810. The .56 caliber 10 inch brass barrel is marked ‘LONDON’ but has Birmingham proof marks, the barrel tang is engraved. Brass furniture has minimal engraving. The stepped lock is clearly marked ‘PHILLIPS’ and is engraved as is the swan necked cock. The ramrod may not be original to the pistol. The walnut stock is in good condition with the usual obligatory bumps and scuff marks. There is a 1 ¾ inch age crack on the left hand side and a 5 inch crack on the right from the muzzle end back toward the lock plate. Two stage action works as it should. Overall length is 15 3/4 inches.
This type of pistol was prized by Sea Captains or for a ship's officer. The brass would fair much better in the salt air conditions as opposed to the iron made guns.
