The most prevalent form of Ottoman pistol from the late 18th through the middle of the 19th century was the Kubur, the Eastern term for the classic horse or cavalry pistol. Many of these guns were produced in the Balkans and Caucasus, as well as being imported from Europe. They tended to follow the form of the early 1700s flintlock continental horse pistols with long, large caliber smoothbore barrels and bulbous brass mounted club like grips. The guns used European style flintlocks, and for the most part they abandoned the miquelet style locks that had been the mainstay of Ottoman firearms ignition for a century.
